Editor conversations preserve background processes and make steering the fresh-install default. Fresh installs steer an active agent when a message arrives instead of queuing or interrupting. Background shells survive turns and workspace/worktree changes; archiving stops them. The next release warns when archiving would stop running processes and adds recovery affordances. IDE 3.26 also labels extension-host crashes as unexpected stops and offers Resume rather than presenting them as user cancellation.

Channel: tagged-release. Half: both. Date: 2026-10-14; follow-up 2026-10-20.

Operator consequence: Test the send mode and process lifetime on a new installation before assuming old interruption behavior. Persistent dev servers can remove repetitive setup between turns, but an archived conversation now has a concrete operational effect. Humans spend less time reconstructing sessions and more on deciding when a continuing process should stop.
