2026-10-13-gemini-cli-headless-plan-mode-now-encourages-autonomous-implementation

Headless Plan Mode now encourages autonomous implementation. v0.63.0 replaces the headless prompt’s wait-for-agreement instruction with directions to settle a strategy, draft the plan without waiting for confirmation and call exit_plan_mode to begin implementation. That exit already switched non-interactive sessions to YOLO. The earlier prompt could leave a run at a text answer, as reported in issue #28913; it never proved every older headless plan run was read-only. The new prompt encourages plan-then-implementation rather than introducing a new authority transition. Unchanged task/todo tools and this prompt change do not establish a first-class durable goal primitive.

Channel: tagged-release. Half: both. Date: 2026-10-06.

Operator consequence: Treat headless Plan Mode as an executable workflow, not a read-only review boundary. For plan-only output, deny exit_plan_mode with an explicit policy and verify precedence, or enforce a read-only filesystem. For implementation jobs the prompt removes a reason for stopping at a plan, but success rates were not tested. Attention moves from approving each plan to deciding the run’s permitted writes, tools and exit conditions before launch.
